What Are Artie Traum Guitars?

At Taylor Guitars workshops, fans got up close and personal with Artie Traum.

Award-winning musician Artie Traum excelled at playing acoustic, folk, jazz and blues guitar. Featured on more than 30 albums, Traum played and recorded with many top artists including The Band, James Taylor, Pete Seeger and Bela Fleck. He chose Taylor Guitars for performing and recording and traveled the world as a clinician and spokesman for the company.

Born in the Bronx in 1943, Artie Traum pioneered New York's acoustic music scene in the late 1960s. He and his brother Happy Traum played the Newport Beach Folk Festival in 1969 and opened for such acts as Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary. Through the years, Artie continued to write songs, record music and produce other artists' CDs. In 1994, Traum recorded a successful jazz album followed by acoustic, instrumental and singer-songwriter recordings. He composed film scores, hosted an NPR radio music program and wrote instructional books on musical styles and guitar techniques. In 2008, Artie Traum died of cancer at age 65.

Guitars

Artie Traum favored Taylor guitars and performed guitar workshops around the world for the company. He played various Taylor guitars on his recordings but usually had a favorite, such as the GS he played on his last CD, "Thief of Time." On his website, he wrote that his overall favorite Taylor guitars include the K22 for finger style and flat-pick playing and the W14C (Walnut) for its gorgeous sound.

Teachings

Artie Traum enjoyed sharing his guitar styles with others. His instructional books, CDs and DVDs, available from Homespun Music Instruction, offer info and tips for acoustic and blues guitar, chords and progressions, tunings and jams. Attendees to his workshops found him to be a warm and knowledgeable teacher.

Influence

With a career spanning 40 years, Artie Traum inspired both professional and amateur musicians. He successfully formed bands with other musicians such as the folk group the Woodstock Mountains Revue and Big Trout Radio. His songs have been recorded by The Band, David Grisman and Tony Rice, and he produced CDs for top artists. In 2011, Woodstock, New York, designated August 6 as Traum Day to honor Artie and his brother Happy for their positive influence on the community.
